If you are a grandparent buying for a grandchild with T1D

Ask the parents before you buy. A useful gift is one they can use in daily care. The Launch Bundle (smart GluBear + 12 months GluApp, $174.99 after a $25.00 launch discount) is the connected option if the child has or will have a CGM. Plush-only ($29.99) is a comfort gift with no lights or app. Do not buy a GluBear as a stand-in for a CGM, pump, or clinic plan. Pre-order; expected delivery is 2027.
  • Green: in range
  • Yellow: check soon
  • Red: needs attention

Ask the parents first

A gift from grandparents for a grandchild with type 1 diabetes fails when it creates work: another login, another charger, another device the clinic did not ask for. Text or call the parents. Ask whether the child already has a CGM, whether they want connected lights, and whether a ship date in 2027 still works for the birthday or holiday you have in mind. The shorter essay is grandparents: ask first.

Connected gift vs comfort-only

  • Launch Bundle (smart GluBear + 12 months GluApp): $174.99 after a $25.00 launch discount ($199.99 list). Use this if the child has or will have a CGM and the parents want lights plus the parent app.
  • Standalone smart GluBear: $99.99. GluApp is billed separately on the App Store or Google Play.
  • Plush-only, no tech: $29.99. A hug with no lights, no app, no CGM connection. Use this if the family is not ready for a connected bear or still on fingersticks only.

Pre-order on Launch Bundle, smart GluBear, or plush-only. Expected delivery is 2027. US shipping only.

After it arrives: followers, not taking over care

Parents can invite a grandparent as a GluApp follower (up to 10). Follower mode is free. That does not replace Dexcom Follow or LibreLinkUp. Learn the household’s low treatment (fast carbs) and do not change pump or CGM settings unless the parents ask. More gift context: gifts for type 1 diabetes.

What not to buy instead of care

Do not treat a teddy as a CGM, insulin pump, primary alarm, or clinic plan. If the grandchild does not have a sensor yet, plush-only is the honest gift. Smart lights need a connected CGM.
