Glucose management for kids: what GluApp is (and is not)

Glucose management for kids starts with the prescribed CGM, insulin, and care plan. GluApp is the GluBear companion: a HIPAA-aware parent app for trend viewing, family accounts, and kids’ education. It is not an insulin dosing app. It reads Dexcom or FreeStyle Libre data and sends green / yellow / red cues to the plush. Insulin doses, carb counts, and pump settings stay on medical devices. Use GluApp for comfort and coordination. Use the CGM for primary alarms and medical decisions.
  • Green: in range
  • Yellow: check soon
  • Red: needs attention

What families mean by glucose management

Glucose management for kids is the medical stack: a continuous glucose monitor, insulin (pump or pens), carb counting, and a care plan. Searches for insulin app, diabetes app for kids, or blood sugar tracking for kids usually mean that stack, or a parent app that sits next to it. GluApp is the next-to-it layer.

GluApp is not an insulin dosing app

GluApp does not calculate boluses, change pump settings, or replace a CGM alarm. It reads existing Dexcom or FreeStyle Libre data, lets parents, grandparents, caregivers, and school nurses view trends if invited, and drives GluBear’s green, yellow, and red lights. Insulin doses stay with prescribed devices and the clinician. That is glucose awareness and education, not insulin delivery.

How the companion loop works

  1. The child wears their existing CGM, which is the primary glucose management device.
  2. GluApp receives that data and can show caregiver trends.
  3. GluBear shows a soft glow: green = in range, yellow = check soon, red = needs attention.
  4. Kids Zone games and stories teach habits. They are not a substitute for DSMES or a 504 plan.

For the hardware loop with Dexcom and Libre, see CGM companion for kids.

Common questions

No. GluApp is a glucose management companion and diabetes app for kids' education, not an insulin dosing app, bolus calculator, or pump controller. It does not change Omnipod, Tandem, or pen settings. Insulin doses, carb counts, and pump programs stay with the prescribed devices and the care team. GluApp reads Dexcom or FreeStyle Libre data, shows trends to caregivers, and drives GluBear's lights. Use medical devices for glucose management decisions.

Ready when the child is
