Diabetes Awareness Month ideas for kids with type 1

Diabetes Awareness Month is November, and World Diabetes Day is November 14. For a child with type 1, useful ideas are a 504 refresher, a stocked low box, and letting the child explain their care if they want to. Skip scary statistics and costume glucose props. A comfort toy can be part of show-and-tell. Talk to your care team and the school nurse before a class activity about glucose.

November, and November 14

Diabetes Awareness Month is November. World Diabetes Day is November 14. For a child who already lives with type 1, the useful version is practical: the adults around them know the plan. Skip classroom talks that lead with complications or big statistics. Talk to your care team before a lesson about glucose numbers.

Ideas that help

  • Refresh the 504 plan and who holds Follow.
  • Restock the low box at school and in the car.
  • Let the child explain type 1 only if they want to.
  • A comfort toy can be show-and-tell. It is not a lesson in dosing.

What to skip

Skip activities that ask the child to perform their illness. Skip props that joke about needles. Skip sharing another child’s glucose on a poster. A blue circle or a quiet classroom conversation is enough. If the child wants to bring a bear for show-and-tell, that is their choice, not an assignment.

Families who want a gift in November should ask the parents which SKU fits. The smart bear is the one with lights. Plush-only is the one without tech. Neither is a donation to a clinic and neither changes a 504 plan by itself. Talk to your care team before a school event that involves food, exercise, or glucose checks.

If you are buying a gift this month

Ask the parents first. The Launch Bundle is the smart bear. Plush-only is comfort without tech. More ideas: gifts for a child with type 1 and the FAQ.
